Primitive means something from a very early period not having advanced technology. Something basic and simple. Made in a way without pretense, not intentionally designed, preserving its character and appearance; and having the quality it deserves. This is how natural wine is made.
Shouldn’t we think that wine, by default, is natural because grapes are a fruit of nature? Surprisingly enough, that is not the case for the majority of wines. However, natural wines are produced with grapes that grow in sustainable agriculture and have had minimal intervention from start to finish. For instance, in natural wine, the grapes on the vine have not been sprayed with chemically laced pesticides and herbicides, only native yeast is present during fermentation, and they have no additives. Not only do the raw ingredients make these wines unique and emphasize their freshness, but also, the authenticity of some of these wines is due to the fact that they are made with indigenous grape varietals unknown to some of us and almost forgotten. Some are bottled unfined and unfiltered, showing some sediment at the bottom of the bottle and contain a very small quantity of sulfur dioxide to stabilize and preserve the wine during transit. In other words, these wines are created with nothing added or taken away. It is wine that is made the primitive way.
Being from Spanish descent, wine has always been a significant part of our lives, as well as our ancestry. As our late grandfather and father always said: “Comer sin vino, no es comer” – “A meal without wine, is not a meal.” So, wine has always been embedded in our family.
The idea to start an online wine shop sparked after attending the first Raw Wine Fair held in our local area of Miami in October 2019. We had some knowledge as to what these wines were about, but what we experienced while tasting the wines presented at this fair opened our minds to a whole new world of wine. Getting to know some of the winemakers and how their wines are made (the way wine should be made) was just as incredible. These wines were fresh. They were alive. They expressed the authenticity behind the people that made them. And so, through this enlightening experience, Primitive Selections was born.
Each one of these wines has a unique story to tell, and in some cases, their natural process has been passed down through generations. With every sip, you can taste the passion and dedication put into each bottle by its producer, as well as the emotion, personality, and terroir behind each harvest. And so, we encourage you to join us on this journey of discovering all the natural wines this industry has to offer. We are certain you will not regret it!
