What is natural wine?

Natural wine is made with grapes cultivated organically or biodynamically (no chemicals in the vineyard.) The grapes are handpicked, and the wine is made in small production. There is no intervention in the cellar, such as additives or additional chemicals, which allows to maintain the purity and integrity of the grape. The fermentation occurs spontaneously utilizing only native yeast. There is neither filtering nor fining, and some have natural occurring sulfites.

What is the difference between natural wines and conventional wines?

The method of making natural wines goes back to practices used long ago, where no modern-day technology existed, and no unnatural substances intervened throughout the process. Conventional wines, on the other hand, are made using modern technological methods which include additives such as: added sugar, food coloring, and acidity regulators, among many others. The wines are filtered using gelatin, egg whites, and isinglass derived from fish. Some are fermented with oak chips instead of within oak barrels and use temperature control to manipulate the result of aromas and flavor.

What do natural wines taste like?

The taste of a natural wine is noticeably different from a conventional wine. These wines can be delicate or astounding to the palate. Due to the slow fermentation, some resemble a cider or are tart to the taste. These are known to have ‘funk.’ Others have a more traditional finish with a smoother ending. Most natural wines are lower in alcohol.

Why choose natural wine over conventional wine?

You should care about what you drink just as much as you care about what you eat. Natural wines are in a sense, organic, due to the nature in which they are produced: nothing added, nothing taken away.

What is Orange wine?

Also referred to as amber wine, orange wine is made from white grapes where the grape skins are not removed and stay in contact with the juice for days or in some cases months, thus giving the wine an amber or orange hue.

My wine has sediment at the bottom. Has it gone bad?

Absolutely not. You will notice that some of these wines, especially the whites, can often appear cloudy. This is because they are unfined and unfiltered; techniques used in the conventional method that strip natural flavors and aromas from the wine. The sediment at the bottom of the bottle is natural fermented yeast, grape skins and/or grape stems and is totally normal.
