A traditional Sardinian wine made from a single 1hA parcel of Angelo Rivano’s oldest Carignano vines, planted in 1970. The bush-trained (‘alberello’) vines are planted ungrafted (‘a piede franco’) and cultivated in the arid, very sunny and windy soils of the island of Sant’Antioco in the southwest corner Sardinia.
Harvested in late September at low yields. Grapes are destemmed and fermented spontaneously with a 12-14 day maceration. Aged in stainless steel for around 6 months and 3 months in bottle.
An impenetrable ruby red color with hints of myrtle, mastic and strawberry tree. Good structure, but elegant and soft. Intense and persistent vinous bouquet. It pairs well with roast and braised meat, but also goes well with roast fish. Serving temperature 62F. It is advisable to uncork the bottle at least 30 minutes before pouring.
“Puméllu in Calasettano means button. Attaching a button (attacò puméllu) is also that long conversation between two people, perhaps better if over a good glass of wine. U (the) Puméllu on the label is the “precious” gold button of my GRANDMOTHER BEPPINA, just as “precious” is this wine, obtained from the grapes of my oldest vineyard. A vineyard with a stingy production but high quality.”
Region: Calasetta, Sardinia, Italy
Grape: 100% Carignano (Carignan)
Vintage: 2021
