Towering over the alpine city of Trento, at some 700+ meters of altitude, are the tiny parcels of vines tended by Matteo Furlani. Matteo is the current custodian of his family plots high in the Dolomites; he is a fourth generation winemaker.
After studying agronomy, not winemaking (he learned that from his father and grandfather) Matteo set his sights on working his land in the most natural of ways. Chemicals were never a part of what Matteo's predecessors used to tend the vines yet Matteo took an even more rigorous approach, incorporating biodynamic preparations and methodologies in the vineyards today.
Made from 100% Schiava (indigenous of this regions), harvested slightly early to preserve its freshness and delicate notes of red fruit. Fermented with native yeasts. It was naturally stabilized by the winter cold in tank and then bottled in the spring.
“I think both Éphém wines would be perfect for aperitifs—perhaps paired with a nice plate of fried olives or small fried fish—and are best enjoyed chilled, almost like a refreshing summer drink. Serving them this way highlights their acidity, which in turn accentuates the aromatic qualities of the grapes.” - Matteo Furlani
With its low tannins, high to medium acidity, and a moderate alcohol level (9% alc/vol), this is very enjoyable chillable red wine that will delight an entire crowd.
Region: Trentino, Alto Adige, Italy
