Marioni Wine - ALTAR 2023
Notes from Dan Marioni, winemaker: Natural wine, to us, means more in the vineyard and less in the cellar. The work we put into farming intentionally allows us to take a hands-off approach to winemaking, adding nothing & taking nothing away leading to a pure representation of place in every bottle.
In 2016, Dan went to the Coturri Winery, a historic wine making gem in Glen Ellen, to see what harvest was all about and he essentially never left. Dan began working with Nic Coturri, Tony's son, making wines under the Sonoma Mtn Winery label. The duo created a philosophy that honors the new and the old world, while being uncompromising about additions and subtractions in the winery. This challenge blooms a variety of wines and styles that lean into each vintage and work uniquely with each site. Sonoma Mtn Winery closed up shop in 2019 and Dan launched Marioni Wine.
‘Altar’ 2023 is a limited production, a unique expression of its terroir, as noted on its label, ‘Young Vine, Old Soul’. This wine exposes lots of tasty fruits like black cherry, berry jam with light spicy elements. Its tannins are velvety and well integrated making this bottle a showcase at your table.
An interesting story behind their bottles’ labels. These are hand-made by husband and wife combo Dan and Jessie Marioni through a lino-cut printmaking process. Essentially, they're inking and printing hand-carved stamps to be scanned and printed for each label. Jessie, a professional tattoo artist in Sonoma, designs the labels and Dan carves them. They wait to taste through wines after fermentation to get a sense of the spirit and character of the wine and that’s what ends up on the bottle.
