Montemelino, Grappolo Rosso

$30.00

Notes from imported: Overlooking Lake Trasimeno, on the northern cusp of Umbria, lies the Cantarelli family farm of Montemelino.  In 1961 Margret Etten Cantarelli made her first vintage of wine, inspired by her passion for the land and a drive to create a fully-functioning, independent farm and winery.  Living in Umbria as a German ex-pat for much of her adult life, she'd found her heart in Umbria and a desire to be connected to its land...thus was borne, Montemelino. Margret, with her husband Guido by her side, worked the land and made the wines for over 50 years, having only recently passed the torch to her daughter Sabina to carry the farm into the next generation.

This is a wine that showcases Sangiovese along with the tiny DOC’s unique local variety - Gamay del Trasimeno (a local strain of Grenache). 60% Sangiovese, 40% Gamay del Trasimeno. Wild yeast fermentation. Aged in cement, then old oak barrels for 6 to 8 months. Minimal added sulfur and no filtering or fining.

Medium-bodied, with well balanced acidity and aromas of red fruits. The palate finds strawberry and tart cherry with dried herbal, mineral notes and a smooth finish. Very drinkable.

Pairs well with hearty pasta, veal, roasted chicken and aged cheeses.

Region: Umbria, Italia

Grape: 60% Sangiovese, 40% Gamay del Trasimeno (Grenache)

Vintage: 2022
