Nicolò Grippaldi - Il Vino di Pico 2022
From Nicolò Grippaldi, a biodynamic winemaker in Gagliano Castelferrato, a small village 651 meters above sea level in the province of Enna, Sicily, who’s dream of becoming a winemaker began in Florence while attending the Faculty of Literature and Philosophy. During those years he heard about biodynamics for the first time from his friends and from there destiny changed his life. After he finished his time at the faculty he returned to Sicily to his great-grandfather’s abandoned land and in 2015 he planted a few thousands vine shoots and created a complete and complex organism where the vines grow, evolve and live. His process is to convert grapes into wine with no manipulation. He lets the earth and the starts to set the natural rhythm. Biodynamics in the vineyard and cellar, he says, is a key factor by which terroir becomes the blood of the earth where it is born .
Il Vino di Pico is an exceptional wine showing off its identity and telling the story of where it comes from. On the nose inviting aromas of toasted spices, blackberry and sweet cherry. The palate is soft, medium-bodied, well-balanced acidity, vibrant red fruits with a hint of minerality, and really elegant.
Pair it with meatballs, sausages, steaks, pasta with tomato sauce and Sicilian pizza.
Region: Sicily, Italy
Grape: 50% Nero d’Avola, 50% Nerello Mascalese
