Tenuta la Piccola - 'Picol Ross' Lambrusco 2024
In the rolling vineyards of Montecchio Emilia, Tenuta La Piccola has been crafting exceptional wines since 1967, blending deep-rooted tradition with a forward-thinking commitment to sustainability. Today, the estate is led by Giuseppe Fontana, a passionate and larger-than-life winemaker whose dedication to his craft is as vibrant as the wines he produces.
The 2024 Tenuta la Piccola Picol Ross is a rare and historic expression of Lambrusco, made from an ancient variety nearly lost to time. Once successfully vinified until the 1940s, Picol Ross was abandoned in favor of higher-yielding grapes—until Licinio Fontana’s dedicated preservation efforts in the 1970s saved it from extinction. This remarkable wine now celebrates 50 years of continuous production. Sourced from 60-year-old vines and hand-harvested at the end of August, the grapes undergo a 15-day fermentation (5-7 days on skins) with gentle pump-overs, but no malolactic fermentation, preserving its natural vibrancy.
Bottled young with no aging, Picol Ross bursts with energy—ripe red berries, wild herbs, and a touch of spice leap from the glass, while its lively acidity and fresh, juicy structure make it an exhilarating and truly one-of-a-kind Lambrusco.
Picol Ross was saved, but is still disappearing. So with more friends of the wine – we can all save it from extinction! It is vinified as it was 100 years ago at the Casoni of Montecchio Emilia.
Pair it with charcuterie board, pizza, anything Italian and you’ll be transported there.
